BENTLEY S1 CONTINENTAL SPORTS SALOON BY H J MULLINER. The Bentley S1 together with the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud were to make their first appearance at the beginning of 1955 and when reviewed by Autosport the following year, John Bolster, their revered columnist, enthused ‘…The Bentley S Series is a most attractive car with superb lines, appearance and finish. It costs a lot of money to the connoisseur who must have the best but it is worth every penny. This will still be a glorious car in forty-five years’ time, just as my own 1911 Silver Ghost is today.’ Whist the standard steel saloon coachwork was specially attractive, there is no denying that the coachbuilt variants, particularly those adorning the Continental chassis, were amongst the most elegant designs of the period and powered by the new 4.9-litre engine, the S Series benefited from a notable increase in performance and
the Continental models were not only luxurious but fleet of foot as well. Offered here is a 1959 S1 Continental with coachwork by H J Mulliner and is believed to be one of just two cars built with this coachwork during that year. The sloping tail was reminiscent of the fast-back style of the Continental R-Type, whilst the rear wings sported fins, albeit restrained, in keeping with the then-current automotive fashion. Finished in metallic red, the motor car has cream hide interior trim and is offered from a deceased estate where it had been many years in that ownership. Mechanically, the overall condition is understood to be sound, although some cosmetic refurbishment is required. Click
